Thinking it might make sense to have a light on it and some extra shells.If you are familiar with the gun the safety location will come second nature. I have never got by thumb hung under the shell lifter either. Both Remington and Mossberg are fine pieces. Either one will serve you well. I just prefer the 870 over the 500 series Mossberg, and I like the M37 Ithaca better than the 870.

The RIA just seemed a lesser quality weapon (fit, function, parts quality). Just my opinion but if they cost is close go with the Mossy.Firearm Related. Probably easier to find Remington parts but right now i am not seeing anything other than field model Remington's. The Winchester feels very solid. Like I said at outset it may come down to availability. I will not be gouged so it limits where I can buy. One local store wanted $300 for a Maverick 88 and $500 for a 500 or the Winchester.The Freedom Group bought Marlin and Remington thenstarted cutting corners. Rust and quality control issues followed. I've got an older 870 that doesn't have rust issues, that said the maverick 88 is going to be a better buy for a new production shotgun. Probably the most bang for your buck in the shotgun world.
